Samaná, República Dominicana.- Las autoridades dominicanas arrestaron hoy a uno de los supuestos responsables de la embarcación que naufragó el pasado sábado en el noreste dominicano, dejando al menos 20 muertos y 24 desaparecidos, cuando pretendía alcanzar las costas de Puerto Rico con decenas de pasajeros indocumentados.
La Marina de Guerra en Samaná y Nagua (noreste) informó a periodistas la detención de David Cepeda Calcaño, quien es señalado por algunos de los sobrevivientes como uno de los que capitaneaba el bote que pretendía llegar a Puerto Rico con al menos 70 personas, pero que naufragó frente a las costas de Samaná.
El organismo comunicó que el detenido es un «reconocido organizador» de viajes de indocumentados a Puerto Rico que opera en Nagua, Samaná, San Francisco de Macorís, Sánchez y Río San Juan, en el noreste dominicano.
Las autoridades comunicaron que Cepeda ha sido sometido a la justicia en al menos tres ocasiones en el período 2000-2008 por organizar viajes ilegales a la vecina isla caribeña.
Asimismo, la institución naval comunicó que se persigue a otras dos personas que participaron en el reclutamiento de los viajeros.
Por otra parte, la directora de la Defensa Civil en Nagua, Minerva Santos, dijo a periodistas locales que un personal de esa institución se encuentra en Samaná rastreando junto a la Marina de Guerra y otras autoridades la zona del accidente en búsqueda de sobrevivientes. Hasta el momento han sido halladas 13 personas con vida.
De su lado, el senador del oficialista Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), de la provincia de Santiago, Julio César Valentín, hizo un llamado a los dominicanos a que no arriesguen su vida lanzándose al mar tratando de llegar a Puerto Rico.
No obstante, expresó que la migración de indocumentados es «normal» en todas las fronteras terrestres y navales, pero que hay que tomar medidas drásticas para evitar que esos naufragios sigan llevando más luto y dolor a la sociedad dominicana.
Ramón Ramírez y María de Jesús Reyes, parientes de Francis Ramírez y Héctor Eduardo de Jesús Reyes, dos de las víctimas del naufragio nativos de San Francisco de Macorís (noreste), dijeron a la prensa local que desconocían que sus familiares harían le peligrosa travesía.
