Los Ángeles.- La superproducción de Disney «John Carter», con un presupuesto estimado de 250 millones de dólares, no pudo quitar el primer puesto de la taquilla a la cinta de animación para toda la familia «The Lorax», la película más vista en los cines de Estados Unidos por segunda semana consecutiva.
Según las estimaciones del portal especializado Box Office Mojo, «The Lorax» sumó 39,1 millones de dólares durante el fin de semana para obtener un total acumulado de 122 millones desde su estreno.
La cinta es una fantasía para toda la familia en la que un niño de 12 años busca por todos los cauces posibles enamorar a la chica de sus sueños, y mientras trata de conseguirlo descubre la historia de Lorax, una criatura que lucha por proteger el medioambiente.
El filme, basado en uno de los cuentos clásicos del Dr. Seuss, cuenta en su versión original con las voces de Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito y Ed Helms.
Por su parte «John Carter» hizo buenos los pronósticos y se hizo con 30,6 millones de dólares, una cifra decepcionante según la prensa especializada por lo abultado de su presupuesto.
La cinta propone una aventura épica en el devastado planeta Marte, un mundo habitado por tribus guerreras y seres salvajes, inmersos en una misteriosa guerra donde John Carter, veterano de la Guerra Civil americana, jugará un papel crucial.
El filme está protagonizado por Taylor Kitsch, Willem Dafoe, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston y Thomas Haden Church.
En el tercer lugar se colocó la comedia alocada «Project X», con 11,5 millones de dólares para esta historia que narra cómo tres estudiantes de secundaria organizan una fiesta de cumpleaños legendaria, algo que consideran necesario para que se les tome en cuenta de una vez por todas.
La cuarta plaza fue para la cinta de terror «Silent House», con 7,01 millones de dólares. La película ofrece 85 minutos rodados en un supuesto plano secuencia orquestado por los directores Chris Kentis y Laura Lu, matrimonio en la vida real.
Su protagonista, Elizabeth Olsen, atrapada en una casa junto a un lago, descubre que no puede contactar con el mundo exterior, al tiempo que es testigo de unos sucesos extraños en el interior de la vivienda.
En el puesto número cinco queda la cinta de acción «Act of Valor», una historia de operaciones especiales con soldados reales, con 7 millones de dólares.
El estreno de la comedia «A Thousand Words» de Eddie Murphy se quedó en la sexta plaza con 6,3 millones, mientras que los estrenos limitados de «Friends With Kids» y «Salmon Fishing in the Yemen» obtuvieron 2,2 millones y 240.000 dólares, respectivamente.
