El Centro Nacional de Huracanes (NHC) de Estados Unidos informó este lunes de que están dadas las condiciones para la formación en las próximas horas de una depresión tropical en el Caribe y advirtió a las Antillas Menores, las islas Vírgenes, Puerto Rico que se preparen para tal eventualidad.
Según un boletín emitido a las 08.00 horas (12.00 GMT), el sistema de baja presión combinado con aguaceros y tronadas que estaba esta mañana localizado a unas 150 millas (241 km) al este de Barbados va a tener un «desarrollo adicional».
Es posible la formación una depresión tropical este lunes, mientras la baja presión se mueve hacia el oeste-noroeste de 10 a 15 millas por hora (de 16 a 24,1 km/h).
Las probabilidades de que después llegue a ser una tormenta con nombre son de un 70 %, según el NHC.
Los pronósticos indican que el sistema alcanzará porciones de las Antillas Menores esta noche, luego se moverá cerca del Islas Vírgenes y Puerto Rico el martes y estará cerca de la Española (República Dominicana y Haití) a mediados de semana.
Según el NHC, son probables lluvias fuertes e inundaciones en las Islas de Sotavento, Islas Vírgenes y Puerto Rico.
Respecto al otro sistema en el Atlántico que el NHC estuvo observando el pasado fin de semana, en el mismo boletín se indica que es cada vez menos probable que se desarrolle durante los próximos días mientras se mueve hacia el oeste u oeste-suroeste a alrededor de 10 millas por hora (16 km/h).
La Administración Nacional de Océanos y Atmósfera de EEUU (NOAA) dio a conocer en días recientes su pronóstico actualizado para la actual temporada, según el cual en el Atlántico se registrará una actividad por encima del promedio.
La actualización hecha por el Centro de Predicción Climática de la NOAA refleja que este año se pueden registrar entre 15 y 21 tormentas con nombre, de las cuales entre 7 y 10 podrían llegar a la categoría de huracán, y de ellas de 3 a 5 pueden ser mayores, esto es de categoría 3, 4 ó 5 en la escala Saffir-Simpson.
Cerca de alcanzar el ecuador de la actual temporada de huracanes en el Atlántico, que comenzó de forma oficial el 1 de junio, la cuenta hasta la fecha es de cinco tormentas tropicales: Ana, Bill, Claudette, Danny y Elsa, la última de las cuales se convirtió a comienzos de julio en el primer huracán de este año.
